Welcome to Fifth Grade!
I am Joanne Slot, one of the two fifth grade teachers at St. Bridget School. I have taught for over 30 years in a variety of grades, the last 20 years here at SBS. I have my BS degree in elementary education, and my MS degree in counseling. I am a CT certified teacher. I love teaching, reading, gardening, and cheering for all NY sports teams. I have two grown daughters and I live in Cheshire.
Fifth grade is an exciting year with much learning and growing. In fifth grade, students are preparing to begin their middle school experience by sharpening their study skills, and challenging themselves in all subjects.
We practice our faith with our kind deeds and helpful acts. We love having the ability to pray and remember God is with us as we go throughout our day. Attending weekly Mass as a school not only brings us closer to God, but also strengthens our school family. Adoration is another way we remember Jesus is always there for us. In religion class we learn about the seven sacraments and the gift they truly are to us.
Academically fifth grade introduces students to many new concepts while also expanding on and mastering concepts already introduced. In language arts students continue to read and write a variety of genres. We also learn about the grammar of speaking and writing properly. Math focuses on using all four operations for whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. We also learn about geometry, measurement, data analysis, and more. I am the social studies teacher for all fifth graders. In social studies we learn about how our nation was founded and we talk about current events when appropriate.
We like to take one or two field trips throughout the year. We may go to the State Capitol, or visit Sturbridge Village. We sometimes go the CT Science Museum in Hartford. There are also visits to our school for enrichment of the curriculum. Speakers, authors, and scientists are a few of the visitors we have had.
Students in fifth grade have many opportunities for extracurricular activities. Students can join the band and participate in many clubs. They can also play a variety of sports including cross country, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading. They can run for student council class representative as well.
Fifth grade is wonderful and I am truly blessed to teach fifth grade here!
