Welcome Fifth Graders!
Scroll to the bottom of the page for the supply list. See below for the Reading and Writing requirements. Students entering 5th grade must complete the End of the Year Math Packet from their 4th grade math book. It is my understanding that students removed these pages from their books at the end of the school year. If any child needs a copy, please contact the school office.
Welcome Fifth Graders!
Welcome to 5th grade! My name is Celeste McKenzie and I have been teaching at St. Bridget School since 2006.
Prior to joining SBS, I taught for 5 years at the middle and high school levels in Catholic schools throughout Connecticut. I live in Bethany with my husband, horse, and, a flock of chickens.
In 5th grade we awaken our senses through reading and writing in several genres including fiction, non-fiction, personal narratives, biographies, and fantasy.
We work with fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, and geometrical figures as we increase our knowledge of mathematics.
All three Sciences are studied in 5th grade: Earth, Physical and Life Science. We conduct many experiments- whether extracting DNA from fruit, or making cast fossils, students are very “hands-on” in science class.
Faith is the core of our school, and through daily faith lessons & weekly Masses, students experience the presence of God in their lives.
Technology is a big part of 5th grade life. We have iPads, Chrome Books, and SMART boards, and most of our textbooks are online. Students learn coding and learn to program Milo, the class robot, to run obstacle courses of their design. Students work collaboratively with me, and with each other in Google docs, and work with the many online components in each curriculum area.
5th graders especially enjoy the time we spend throughout the year with our PreK-3 and PreK-4 buddies.
We visit them, and they visit us, we do projects together and we read to them. My class’s final Language Arts project is to write and illustrate a children’s book that we share with our little friends each June.
St. Bridget School is a family of learners, collaborators, and teachers, where every day offers an opportunity to learn something new.
“This is an awesome way to learn.”
“Fifth grade is challenging, but fun!”
"What I love about SBS is that we start and end each day in prayer.
The students are nice and the teachers give great lessons on every subject. I always love hanging out with my friends, and welcoming new kids, as our school community grows."
“Do we get to keep the chickens?”
“Protons, electrons, and....croutons?”
Frequently heard during small group projects: “Can you play the piano for us? We work better with music.”
When discussing the Trinity here were other student references to the number 3 in Catholicism: “St. Patrick and the 3-leaf clover,” “He rose in 3 days,” “Jesus died at age 33,” “Judas denied Him 3 times,” “3 gifts: gold, myrrh, and that stuff that smells in church.”
